“Welcome to our Home!”
Let’s get the conversation started about Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles in Bronzeville! A couple of weeks ago my manager reached out and told my partner team leader and I that she would like to take us out to lunch as a way of appreciating us for all of our “hard work”. Not being super picky, I let my partner team leader decide. Right from the beginning she wanted fried chicken and the rest is history. As noon rolled around I headed out and was pleased to learn that the restaurant was only about 15 minutes from the Loop. Luckily for us, there was tons of street parking located conveniently right near the restaurant as well as a bus stop right outside. I don’t know what I imagined but as soon as I walked through the doors I felt at home. The restaurant itself was clean and inviting, and the amazing smell and soft music really drew me in. We arrived at exactly the right time and were seated right away but for those who came after us they weren’t so lucky. After sifting through the menu I decided to order the Saint and Carol. My manager ordered the same thing but with wings and my partner team leader ordered Monique’s Love with a side of Mac and Cheese. Each of our plates ranged from $9 to $12 and had I went myself the total with tip would have come out to roughly $15 so not too expensive.
The Saint and Carol consisted of ¼ dark fried chicken with two waffles. The waffles were soft and decadent and the chicken was crispy and juicy. For my first chicken and waffles experience it was without a doubt a good one. It was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. The Monique’s Love, on the other hand, consisted of a fried chicken breast with a side of potato salad. Although my partner team leader didn’t share, she described the mac and cheese as extremely cheesy and rich and the potato salad as satisfying and filling. The meal would have been fitting at anytime of the day: breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I honestly don’t know what I liked better, the atmosphere or the food. Whenever I make my way back to this gem I would love to try some of their soul food or one of their signature omelettes. How good does chicken sausage and diced fried chicken tucked inside of a gigantic five egg cheesy omelette sound? Yum!
When it comes to Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles, I give it a 4 out of 5 sporks. I’ll definitely be adding it to the list of places I tell my friends to visit when they are coming in from out of town. In addition to their Bronzeville location, they also have one in Oak Park as well as another location in Cleveland. Check it out!
